Learn the location of every natural note on every string by doing this drill. What is a natural note? Its one that has a name like G or D; contrast that with notes like G-flat or D-sharp: those are not natural because they have accidentals in their names. There are only 7 natural notes: A, B, C, D, E, F and G.
The "rule" is that the distance between any two natural notes is 2 frets except between E and F or between B and C.
E < = > F is one fret.
B < = > C is one fret.
Click on a string on the fingerboard below. Now play those notes on your guitar and say the name of each note as you play it. Do this going up the string (moving up in pitch) then back down the string (descending pitch). Do this everyday for about 2-3 minutes. Maybe concentrate on just learning one string every week. In a few weeks you will know where any natural note is on the fingerboard.
Wanna make this lesson a little harder? Try singing the names of the notes when you do this matching the pitch of your voice to the pitch of the note.
You know you have mastered this drill when you can do it on every string without refering to this page.
