Barre Chords

Barre chords are a pain to learn, literally. The barre is what you index finger makes as it tries to hold down 6 strings at once---OUCH! Good luck. There are some tricks, like try pressing with the side of your finger rather than the fleshly flabby bit in the middle.

The first step to making a barre chord is to lay your index finger across all 6 string at the proper location. These are all some kind of G chord so that means your index finger should barre across the strings at the 3rd fret. Then place your other fingers as indicated by the diagram.

Also, barre chords are moveable. Where you place it on the fingerboard determines which chord it is. These are shown with a root note of G.

Wherever your index finger is on the 6th string, that is the letter name of the barre chord you are making. So to play an A major chord, play the first shape but at the 5th fret. If you need to learn the names of the notes on the 6th string, here is a lesson to help you learn the fingerboard.
